Settlers’ Ghost Golf Club, Barrie, Ontario – June 19, 2007
Barrie, Ont. (Golf Canada) – Settlers’ Ghost Golf Club was the stage for yet another electric finish as Christine Boucher of Rouyn-Noranda, Que. overcame a lightning delay and won a three-way playoff to earn an exemption into the CN Canadian Women’s Open.
Boucher, who started the day in 15th position seven off the lead, carded a final round two-under par 70 to force a playoff between Walailak Satarak of Thailand and amateur Lauren Mielbrecht of Gulf Stream, Fla. The 24-year old Boucher then went the distance sinking a birdie putt in the second playoff hole to earn the $5,833 (CDN) winners purse and the exemption into the CN Canadian Open held August 13-19 at Royal Mayfair Golf Club in Edmonton, Alta.
Satarak, who was in second place to start the day and was playing in the final group, had a chance to win but three-putted the 18th to finish tied at 145 with Boucher and Mielbrecht after 36-holes. In the playoff Satarak bogeyed the first hole while Boucher and Mielbrecht both parred to carry on.
Boucher earned her first professional win after sinking a 20 foot putt in the second playoff hole while Mielbrecht missed her birdie attempt.
Lightening delayed the final round for one-hour midway through the early afternoon after a severe rain storm moved through the Barrie area. Boucher actually had to wait twice to seal her victory; once during the lightening delay and another hour after she posted her score as the clubhouse leader hoping it was enough to force a playoff.
